"The Ascension of the Virgin" (also known as the "Virgin of the Immaculate Conception") is a polychrome wood statue from the colonial period, most likely the early 19th century. She is ascending on the crescent moon with 3 angels adoring her feet carrying a glorious banner. In this statue, the Virgin represents “a beautiful young girl, with long flowing hair, serious eyes and a perfect nose and mouth” (Xavier Bray, The Sacred Made Real). This profound image depicting the Virgin was influenced by Francisco Pacheco (1564-1644). She is bright like a star; indeed her cloak is highlighted with gold gilded stars, and is very detailed, hand-carved in the round of wood with polychrome. The face and hands are carved of ivory. The statue is in original excellent condition with no chips or missing parts, only minor aging, light rubbing in a few areas and some very small hair-line cracks. This statue was made in Europe during the missionary period and exported to Asia between 1700 and 1900. The Virgin of the Immaculate Conception is 32” (82cm) tall including the 4” (10cm) base.
