The word Rosary means "crown of roses." St. Louis De Montfort calls the Rosary "the mystical rose tree of Jesus and Mary in life, death, and eternity." The stories of Mary and the Rosary are many throughout Christian history. Regardless, this sculpture most likely came from a small niche in a church often placed on the opposite side of the altar. Mary represented here with her rosary also has her hands together in the gesture of prayer. The sculpture is beautifully executed with glass inset eyes which convey the appearance of serenity and life. Her blue robe is tied with a blue belt and the yellow cloak falls naturally over her hair down to her feet. This artistically crafted polychrome statue still maintains its original colors and gilding. This is seen by the lines in the polychrome (paint) that resulted from shrinkage over the years. These lines accentuate the beauty of this sculpture and add an aged quality that is impossible to find in a contemporary carving. This statue was made in Europe and shipped to Asia during the missionary period (1700 – 1900). Mary of the Rosary stands 24” (61cm) tall.
