This statue of St. Dominic, founder of the Dominican Order, is widely represented in churches throughout Asia and became prevalent during missionary establishment. This sculpture was obviously made by a master European carver who paid close attention to every detail. The naturalistic carving is notable for its lifelike pose, schematic placement of the arms and the elaborate decoration of the Dominican garments with abundant folds and pleats. The colors of the garments are quite stunning with contrasting details and richly decorated gilded border patterns called “pastiglio”. The face is carved from ivory with defined cheekbone and pinched lips surrounded by a well carved beard. The exquisite detail can be seen in the mustache, high ridge nose, and large eyes inset with painted glass. This statue of St. Dominic is still graced with the original polychrome patina that would be impossible to replicate in a modern sculpture. This European statue was exported to Asia during the missionary period (1700 – 1900). St. Dominic is 23” (58cm) tall.
