The base was carved in the shape of a globe representing the universe. Her long pink robe and outer garment draped naturally with finely details folds. Her blue cloak and pink dress are ornamented with gilding along the hem in “pastiglia” style. The blue cloak is also decorated with of large beautiful flowers that are also gilded in “pastiglia. The lines in the paint are the result of shrinkage over the years and are a testament to the age and originality of the polychrome. These lines accentuate the beauty of this sculpture and add an aged quality that is impossible to find in a contemporary carving. This statue was made in Europe during the missionary period (1700 - 1900) for export to Asia. The Madonna stands 26” (66cm) tall.
