This is the most popular image representing St. Joseph, the husband of the Virgin Mary, and earthly father of Jesus. He carries the tool of a carpenter (T-Square) in his left hand and the branch of lily flowers in his right. The tunic and outer cloak are carved with many pleats and folds. The face, inset with painted glass eyes, is serene with an expression of resignation perhaps following closely upon visitation of God’s messenger. This artistically crafted polychrome statue still has the original gilding (collar, hems and flowers) and paint. The age and originality of the paint can be seen by the lines in the polychrome that resulted from shrinkage over the years. These lines accentuate the beauty of this sculpture and add an aged quality that is impossible to find in a contemporary carving. A statue of this size usually comes from a niche inside a church. This statue was crafted in Europe during the missionary period and exported to Asia between 1700 and 1900. St. Joseph is 24” (61cm) tall including the 2” (5cm) base.
