This polychrome wooden head of a Saint is the only surviving part of a complete statue that was crafted in Europe during the missionary period for export to Asia between 1700 and 1900. This head and the associated larger statue were most likely made for processionals. A processional piece often had the face, hands and feet carved of wood (or some more precious material) and a framed body dressed in fabric. The fabric did not often survive with time and many of the framed bodies were lost. All that remained of these wonderful Icons are the heads, hands and feet. These surviving pieces stood the test of time because they were highly prized and were often made of ivory or alabaster. It was easy to build another frame and transfer the delicately carved features to a newly clothed body. This head was once adorned with real hair. It has exquisite detail, beautiful inset glass eyes and is in extremely good condition. The height of the Saint’s head is 8" (20cm).
