This polychrome wooden head of Joseph is the only surviving part of a complete statue that was crafted in Europe during the missionary period for export to Asia between 1700 and 1900. This carving is the crowning piece of a large statue made for the altar or for processions. This head is one of the finest carved pieces ever seen, done by a master carver and can be compared to the head of Saint John done by Alonso Cano (1601-1667). This Head of Joseph has fully detailed eye lids, a downward gaze, high cheek bones, tight lips, and a wonderfully furrowed brow. The color is perfect with wonderful skin tones and beautiful inset glass eyes resulting in an expression that is very life-like. For its age, this saint is perfect and in original condition. The Head of Saint Joseph is 8.5” (21.5cm) tall.
