This small sculpture was probably made for personal devotion in a convent or monastery. It comes from northern Vietnam where the Jesuit and Franciscan Orders started building their missions in the northern region of Annam (present day northern Vietnam). Mary is seated with baby Jesus standing on her lap carved in a very gothic style. This artistically crafted polychrome statue still obtains original colors and gilding which can be seen by the lines in the polychrome (paint) that resulted from shrinkage over the years. These lines accentuate this sculpture and add an aged beauty that is impossible to find in a contemporary carving. The inset glass eyes, exquisite and very small, had to be the work of a master craftsman and add a light to Mary’s face. This statue was made in Europe for export to Asia during the missionary period (1700 – 1900). Madonna with Baby Jesus stands 12” (30cm) tall.
